If you want it to last, prime it first.
Then spray it gold. This technique also works with silver.
Then wipe on a generous amount of dark walnut wood stain.
Make sure to get it in all the detail, that is where you want it when you're finished.
You can also use golden oak for a less dramatic effect.
When you wipe it off, hold the rag mostly flat because you want to leave the stain in the recesses.
It's just that easy.
