I Can Do That: Lauren Brum

Marzipan Bumblebees

I'm sure that all of you know about my strong affinity for brooches and baking. Recently, while perusing some baking blogs and websites, I found a tutorial on how to make marzipan bumble bees! My bumble bee brooch is my most favorite piece of jewelry so you can imagine the excitement when my two worlds collided!

I cannot wait to make these little delights the next time I bake for a special occasion.

Here is what you need to make them:
-2 ounces marzipan per bee
-Yellow and black gel-paste food coloring
-Unblanched almond slices
-Cupcakes (any flavor)

-Swiss Meringue Buttercream, tinted yellow
-Pastry bag
-Small petal pastry tip

Here is how:
  1. Add yellow gel paste to 1 portion marzipan and black gel paste to the other. Knead each to incorporate.
  2. Roll each portion into a 1/8-inch-diameter rope. Cut each rope crosswise into 1/8-inch slices.
  3. Stack 5 slices together horizontally, flat sides facing, alternating colors, starting and ending with yellow. Press together gently. For the head, roll a yellow slice into a ball, and press onto body. For the eyes, roll 2 bits of black marzipan into balls; press onto head. For the stinger, shape the tail piece into a slight point. For the wings, press a sliced almond into each side of bee. Repeat. Use immediately.
